GI Joe Destro Action Figure

Destro Figure

Released in the early 80's was the Destro figure by Hasbro for their GI Joe Real American Hero line of 3.75 inch tall action figures. GI Joe was one of the toys I loved as a child growing up and served as one of the major pillars of my childhood.

In the file card that was printed at the back of the figure's packaging, Destro was identified as the Enemy Weapons Supplier. In the cartoon series, one could easily surmise that Destro was part of the Cobra organization. In the Larry Hama penned comic book series however it was more predominantly seen that Destro was a third party in the conflict of Cobra against the GI Joe team. His allegiance was mostly to himself and worked both sides in order to further his advantage.

In the comic book series it was shown that Destro was of noble lineage in the United Kingdom and even owned his own castle. The Beryllium alloy mask that he wears was something that he inherited from his father and is worn traditionally by the current Baron Destro.

One common theme played out in either the cartoon series or the comic book series is his on going romance with the Baroness of Cobra.

Destro Figure

The Real American Hero Figure of Destro comes equipped with a laser pistol and a backpack that can open up to show weapons and armaments. Since the Destro figure formed part of the earlier editions of the toyline, it lacked a swivel head that allowed the head to be raised or lowered. All the figure could do was face left or right. Also the head was obviously not proportional to the size of the body, as compared to the regular GI Joe figures. Not sure if this was done to emphasize that Destro had a mask on.

The right bracelet in his arm is supposed to be a small dart or arrow launcher.

I don't recall what the left bracelet was for, if it was a weapon, but definitely it served a utilitarian function

Close up of the chest shows a red jewel like pendant on his naked chest next to a radio device. I don't remember if the history of this pendant was ever told in either the comics or the cartoon.
